Hi friends

We are planning to get married in canada ( my wife canadian, me on study permit) and then apply for inland processing.

But the problem is, to get the marriage certificate after civil registration takes a very long time...up to 10/12 weeks. I wonder if submitting the marriage certificate is mandatory with the application or I can apply with other substitutre documents like marriage license obtained before marriage?

Please be kind to share your experience and advice.

Thanks and good luck.

Hello Oronno,
In my Immigration Consultation - ? Thread (on the same page) we're discussing this right now! From my understanding, you get the marriage license that same day. They send it to the Office of the Registrar and in 8-12 weeks you can contact that Office of the Registrar and apply for your Marriage Certificte (which on the website says 6-8 weeks by mail). I'm trying to confirm if:

a. You have to wait 8-12 weeks to contact the Office of the Registrar.
b. On Service Canada online (I think it's Service Canada) it says you can get your Marriage Certificate online in 15 days. Question is, does CIC accept that? Or do you have to do the mailing which takes 6-8 weeks?

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this! I may just call CIC and find out. If that's the route I take, I will be sure to post it here.

Marlena a poster here has done it and was approved as a sponsor she explained her situation and than upon receiving the marriage certificate forwarded it to the visa office.

I believe the only issue I was having was, her's had a reason, and mine is just because I'm impatient... I have no real reason other than wanting to be with my love faster... I'm not sure if they would accept that. But who knows! Immigration is a funny world. Oronno, I'm not sure what your case is.

I don't know what her issue could have been.. She can answer it better herself.. :) I think she just didnt want the delay of 12 weeks.. hence would be the same reason as being impatient :) I don't think you want to wait for 12 weeks if you have everything else ready.. But if it happens you are not finished gathering all your evidence by this time you may as well wait .. good luck!

I think the website you are talking about would be Vital Statistics right? I really don't know but it doesn't seem like something Service Canada would be responsible for.

I remember I have seen in some older posts, the couple got married just after the partner came to canada in visit visa and within week applied to CPC-V. If they had waited for the marriage certificate, it should have taken much longer.

Probably someone who already got married in canada can share the story.

Or someone with genuine info from CIC.

Please be kind to share.

15 days online only for emergency but sponsorship application is not considered emergency that's what the registrar office told me.
All you have to do is provide the record of marriage (when you exchange your vows they provide you with a certificate) you can send it with your sponsorship and explain that you marriage won't be registered before 8 to 10 weeks. They will accept it. As soon your receive a copy of your marriage certificate you have to send it to the visa office abroad. By the time I received it I sponsorship was already approved and my file was already sent to the visa office abroad.

Good luck!!!

P.S. if you are going to be married at the city Hall in Ottawa they are not going to provide you with a copy with a marriage license. They will keep it but as I mentioned they will provide you with a record of marriage after the ceremony.

Has been answered but i did go through this exact situation
send in certificate with app as to not delay ,and apply for copy of act
send when receive ,as process is plenty long enough and you will have pleanty of time to send in later.
cheers
