Dear brothers & sisters,

I have landed in Toronto on 15 April, 2012. I am planning to come back to my home country to get married after receiving my PR Card.At this moment I am waiting for the PR Card to be issued.

I have heard that if any permanent resident in Canada wants to sponsor his spouse (who is residing outside Canada) after getting PR card, has to spent their conjugal life together back in his country for 1 year. I am not sure about that. Is this a recent change?

Could you please suggest me whether I have to stay with my future wife in my home country for 1 year if my marriage takes place there, though at present I am in Canada as a permanent resident?

Thank you for your kind reply.

Regards,

Sumon

No - you don't have to stay with your new wife for one year before sponsoring her. You can sponsor her immediately.

Note that since you are a PR (rather than a citizen), you must be living in Canada in order to sponsor your wife and you must continue living in Canada while the file is being processed and until her PR visa is approved. If you want to take a short trip (2-3 weeks) out of Canada - that's fine. Anything longer and you risk having your file refused for failing to live in Canada while the application is being processed.

To build on syclla's response, take a look at the application available at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp

The instructions are quite detailed and going through the forms will give you a sense of the info you need to start collecting such as wedding photos, e-mails, phone call records, letters, etc to prove your relationship.

Congratulations on your wedding and good luck with your spousal sponsorship :)
