So I was wondering if my marriage in Canada will be recognized in the u.s. Should I be taking a marriage license from America instead of getting one in canada or should I be getting both???

I never been married before so I am really clueless on the whole marriage thing. What papers need to be changed? What should I be doing? Do I bring stuff from america or do I wait till I get to canada to do it all. I have to wait till I go to Canada to do anything and only have a month to get it all done.

Firstly, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to get married in Canada and then start the PR process to move to Canada? Your explanation want really clear.

It doesn't matter where you get married. I'm American and my husband is Canadian. We eloped in Florida. We have a US marriage certificate. Canada recognizes our marriage and our marriage certificate is valid everywhere. I imagine the same applies vice versa. A lot of people have destination weddings and it's still recognized. I don't think you can get a marriage certificate from two countries if you got married in only one.

Alright. Yes I am trying to get married in Canada. I already started the p.r. process about 5 or so months ago. It was sept. of last year. We just decided after 11 years of being together to get married. I Would love to stay there with him but I am not sure what is going on with p.r.

I was wondering if I could apply for an open work permit so I can move there faster but I am not quite sure if it would ruin my outland process.

There is also the fact I don't know what I am to say to customs when they ask for my reason to visit. Should I tell them I am currently waiting for my p.r. process to be finalized and I am here to get married? Or should I tell him I am here to visit my boyfriend. I already have the return ticket cause I know that they will want proof that I am leaving again. I wish Canada was like the old days where you could get married and just be a citizen XD!!!

You don't qualify for an open work permit since you applied using the outland process. Open work permits are only available to those who applied inland.

A Canadian marriage will be recognized in the USA. You don't need anything else.

They may have said it is better because the wait time to actually get PR status for outland apps is significantly less. A lot of us stay here in Canada as a visitor the entire time of the outland PR process. Some of us just sacrifice one paycheck. Oh and don't volunteer information. We often think we're helping ourselves when we do that but what we might think is harmless the cbsa won't necessarily see it that way. Then we get nervous and flustered when they ask us probing questions and we end up saying the wrong things. Just answer what they ask you in the simpliest way. Why are you coming here? Well you are coming to visit your friend right? So that's what you tell them since that's what you're doing. Also you have a return ticket so that's always a plus.

I dont think I will be able to lie to them and say I am here to visit my boyfriend when we are getting married DX. I will try to do it though if it will make it easier.
