Can somebody help me please... I am a permanent residence here in Canada and in a few months I will apply for a citizenship. My fiance and I just got married last March 14, 2010 and after the marriage in the Philippines, I flew back here in Toronto. And obviously, I am planning to sponsor him. We have gathered all the requirements and completed all the answers in the application except for the part of my marital status and may last name. I haven't change any documents or ID's with my husband last name yet. Still,,...I confused...

A lot of people said, it's okay if I don't change my last name or update and documents because I'm applying for citizenship soon. Doesn't make sense if I change all my IDs today just to sponsor my husband and change it again after I got my citizenship. right? But also, some people said that I need to change my last name and status as well. Basically, all my IDs needs to be change...:( What am I gonna do? please help....

What am I gonna write on my application, the part that they were asking for my last name and marital status. Do I have to write married eventhough I don't update my status yet with all my documents here in Canada and use my maiden name and provide them with our marriage certificate? If not... how can I update all my documents?

Yesterday I went to update my status on my healthcard. They said that, I can only update may last name and get a new healthcard. But they were asking for a ID with my husband's last name and signature on it. But I don't have any because, I didn't update any yet.

And for my SIN...I don't have to update it if I'm still with my permanent residence card. I can only change it if I am a Canadian Citizen...

For the Canada Revenue records,...I can update mt status by mail. I just have to fillout the application, send copy of out marriage certificate and letter request and they will update it for me.

For my Philippine passport, sad to say....The office is closed...I can call them in Monday maybe for inquiry. But if somebody knows or suggest what am I gonna do...I will be thankful.

And for my PR card. Still...I don't have any idea what to do...

This is the only part on our application that I still have doubt...please help us.

Much appreciated..

Hi there,

I have applied for sponsorship of my husband a month after our marriage (Feb 2010) and I used my maiden name hyphenated with his surname. Our sponsorship has been approved already. There is no problem with using your maiden name, as long as you present your marriage certificate. What is important is that you prove the authenticity of your relationship. My name has been updated automatically by CIC, i now use my husband surname when accessing the ECAS. Though i still have not changed my PR card yet.

You should tick married coz that is your status at the time of your application for sponsorship.

Take it one step at a time. I was overwhelmed too when i was doing the application, so I just put off changing my name and focused on filing the sponsorship first. Name change should come easy later on. Up to now i still have not started it. Luckily, my employer took charge of updating my name in MSP and CRA.

You can always present your marriage certificate anyway. Just carry it if you have to prove your identification.

Email me at titakitty@yahoo.com if you still have questions.

Thanks titakitty. Now, we don't have to worry alot. I will update my status and last name probably when husband comes here in Canada and focused on our application first. Thank you so much.
