Mailing passport for PR?

Hi forum,
assuming a miracle happens and I get PR really soon: Do I need to send my passport somewhere if I am from a visa-exempt country?
Is there a deadline for this, because I'm planning to visit Canada for two weeks in the near future and I will need my passport for this..?
