Living in the US. What can I use to prove I'll return to Canada?

Since I have no idea how long the application will take to approve, there isn't really any way I can get a rental agreement as I don't know any dates to give an apartment.

Can I have either my mother or my friend (who we may end up living with when we return) draw up a letter stating that they will house me and are expecting me and I have put a down deposit on first months rent?

I live in the US currently and I'm trying to get all the applications filled out but having a hard time trying to figure out how to show proof I'll return as none of the options seems do-able without a for sure date, and I can't do that without knowing how long the application will take :S

Any help would be appreciated.

as long as you give them evidence that you have somewhere to stay or give them a written breakdown of your plans once you get to canada that should do. They just want to know that you have a plan when you get here

Open a bank account, get a letter from your mother or a friend stating they will rent you space or house you and your partner, state your occupation and show search results for the application in the area you intend to reside in. Those types of things to show you plan to re-establish. While doing so, keep in mind that you will also have to show that you plan to not use social assistance during the sponsorship period.

I have a bank account already with RBC, can I use that as proof if required?

Also speaking of social assistance. I was on EI once, will that hurt me going forward? (obviously no longer on it)

EI, no. You cannot be on social assistance when you apply. The bank account shows a tie to Canada. By using the letter for housing, and outlining a re-settlement plan (a piece of paper that you add in to supplement the sponsorship package), and discuss financial plans (to show you will avoid social assistance), you should be ok.

Okay, yes, I was only on EI about two years ago and it was for three months. Clearly that is not the case now.

So for example could I put (obviously in more detail) the following, and do you think it would suffice?:

While waiting for approval, I will be saving money to assist with moving costs back to Canada, as well as basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing etc, etc.
Upon arrival back in Canada, plans will be to either live with my mother or my friend located in Southern Ontario (would obviously state actual locations with addresses) with my wife, until we are able to obtain employment and seek out out own apartment/place to live.

I currently have one bank account in Canada, through RBC, the account details are as follows _____________, attached are a few statements with recent transactions.

Also on the one application, it says when do I ended to go back? What should I put? Whats the average wait time? Will it take longer if I put a year from the date we're going to be moving into our new apartment in the US? (Not that we wouldn't just pay off the lease to go sooner if possible)

Again thanks for all your responses and help!

Looks like an ok plan. You may want to state the type of work you do, and a search result for the area of Southern Ontario that you plan to live in. Outland US applications are (were) taking about 3-6 mos. I would just set a date, and head back. You can state you are waiting until approval to re-settle, but actually coming back on a set date would send a clearer message that you plan to re-settle.

My $0.05 here anyway. Others who have done this are of course welcomed to comment.

i would NOT recommend using set dates in a resettlement plan. We have seen at least 1 US application get rejected because the settlement plan has specific dates that were based on the processing time on the website, and CIC decided the couple was not ready to settle right away, so the file was rejected and they were told to reapply when ready.

i'm not familiar where the applications specifically asks for a date you intend to go back to canada. does it prompt you for a date or just an explanation? if just an explanation, it is certainly better to say "upon approval...". if a specific date is required, then use a 6 month timeline. the plan does not need to be concrete, and CIC certainly isn't going to track whether you follow the plan exactly as it's written. it just needs to make sense.
