Be Cautious to bring Nanny from abroad – better first try here locally in Canada - Long Post - so if you want to read that's ok
This is totally personal view based on our recent experience, until unless you really know the person or family background. Don’t select any random person for Nanny position. This may cost you a lot.
We started our LMIA process in September 2017 and everything went well got approval in Jan 2018, by the time we were looking for Nanny on different websites outside Canada – particularly on Facebook where there is group and we were in particular looking for Nepali Nanny and you can find bunch of member there. We selected few and interviewed and finalize one (that took 3-4-month process) before making our final decision. We selected a nanny from Nepal living in Cyprus and Israel experience. Gave our job offer, explained all the situation of our house with 2 small kids, what are the requirements, etc working hours, vacation time, etc. and she said ok ok to everything. Initiated work permit on behalf of her – finished all the documentation, paid the fees, we asked the document, she provided, and work permit got approved in 2-week time.
We booked the flight ticket based on her preference as she didn’t want to have long wait flight, etc. etc. and we understand as we were also immigrant at some point of time like anyone who wishes to come to Canada. We paid extra for her ticket based on selection and also we didn’t mind as she was going to be our family member
She flew and we were happy to see her and our kids were also happy to see. Suddenly after a week (when she met her friend on weekend), she started a discussion we are paying less money. We were paying standard min wage of $14/hr for 40 hours a week. We earlier requested her while giving offer that your wage will increase from next year as Ontario govt will increase their min wage.
We told her – why it is less and we have discussed this while giving offer and when she was in Cyprus, she was ready to take anything, because she wanted to come to Canada. There she was earning around 800 euro and here she will earn gross 560$ per week!! She will earn 400 euro more here in canada if we convert !! Additionally she has bought the latest Iphone 8 as soon as she entered (already she had 2 samsung phone) and complaining us regarding we are paying less - (that is anyway not our concern)
Anyway we explained here that this was part of contract and we will give you this until Dec 2018. She was sad on this and we were sure something was going in her mind. Later on due to unforeseen situation, we came 2 hour late for two days because of some reason and we informed her earlier. She complained that although there is not much work, I think this will come in overtime as kids were with her !! - I told her as per contract we wrote that max 44hrs we will pay whatever is required and then we can pay overtime, however she started complaining all sort of thing and gave us notice that she wants to go.
We spend on LMIA, Work permit, Flight, For payroll, etc with around $5000 and after a month she resigned!! We were shocked, and tried to explain her stay for 6 months and see what is the real issue as we are small family and if we feel you are good, we can pay bonus !! But at the end we came to know her motive was just to enter Canada and any agent can help her to get new LMIA and job with more cash jobs
This is what our person experience is. When I came on new job, I would always try for atleast a year to see and gain experience (until unless someone is not abusing you)
But we feel we were used by a immigrant (like us) because they want to enter CANADA !!
So be careful to hire a Live-in Nanny on work permit until unless you are very sure – as contract is just a piece of paper and your hard earn money what you spent on her will be of no use. All wants to come to Canada at any cost plus they are well versed than us - take work permit - if you don't like employer - it is very easy to change !! and yes it is extremely easy ( no complains on this)
Thoughts are welcome, and I agree everyone is not same, but feel everyone wants to come Canada at any cost !!! You will not get your Money back !!!
