Live-in caregiver - not working out

Hi everyone,

We employed a nanny through the live-in caregiver program. She arrived in the country 2 weeks ago and, having spent quite a lot of time and money to bring her here, we are sadly very disappointed. She is unable to keep up with the job (which our previous nanny managed just fine), not very enthusiastic, and generally lacking in competence. We are worried to leave our kids with her for any length of time because we're just not confident she would be able to make decisions or call 911.

So here's my question. If we lay her off so early in the contract (which is really unfortunate but might be necessary), how can we make it easier on her to move on and find another job? She's in a new country and doesn't have a lot of money, so it might be tough on her.

Her notice period is 4 weeks, and we would be happy to let her stay in the house until that period ends. Is there anything else we can do to make things easier?

Thanks
V

Talked to her first and discuss your concern, maybe she is still on the adjustment period. In any case it is also your right as an employer to lay her off if she cannot do her job stated on her contract. You can contact her minority group in your area so they can help her on her accomodations and maybe help her find a new employer.

May we know from what country? And if you care to share, what province are you in?

Sure. She's Filipina and we're in BC.

Its a very unfortunate situation, but obviously our kids come first and we don't really have a choice here.

Really sorry to hear about that. I'm shocked somewhat, but i guess there's one in every batch.

You can contact the Filipino Community or the satelite office of the Philippine Embassy in B.C, they might help her on her accomodation and might help her on finding a new employer. It is good to know at least you are also taking her situation in consideration. I hope you will find a suitable nanny for your family.

Thanks everyone for the guidance, its really appreciated.

We're going to give her the option to fly back to Philippines as we can get very cheap tickets.

Does anyone know how much she is likely to have spent on the immigration process? I think she probably paid for a medical and the services of an immigration consultant.. I don't know if there were any other fees that she had to pay.

If she does decide to go home, we obviously don't want her to lose too much money on this process (or any money at all, ideally).
