List of qualified jobs restricted?

Is it just me or has the list of eligible jobs for the Federal Skilled Workers been restricted since July this year???

It appears that Engineers of no kind are welcome any more. I am an Indian national and I graduated from Carleton University, Ottawa in 2009 with a Masters Degree in Applied Science (Electronics) ... studied 2.5 years while doing the Research Assistant and Teaching jobs within the university as an international student with scholarship.

Then I have moved to Switzerland for a PhD. While I was studying in Canada, I do remember Electrical Engineers (NOC 2133) to be a part of the list of eligible jobs... Is Canada restricting immigration?

I now seem to be in a limbo- I can't apply to the Federal Skilled Class because of this reason and the new CEC class does not apply since I did not work in Canada AFTER I graduated with my masters (although I am deemed a full time employee of the university while I was studying)

Any suggestions or advice, as to what my options are at the moment? Also, any chances of the immigration to go back to the old relaxed state any time in the near future??

Which side of Switzerland did you go? If the French side and you know french you may apply to Quebec.

Wow Zsashimi! A +1 to you thinking OUTSIDE THE BOX on that reply! And Good Luck Asridhar finding your niche in Canada. Another suggestion is to network like mad with all the people with whom you were acquainted while studying and working at the University, get an offer of employment and come that way. If you check the CIC website you will see that there was a significant shake up on 26 June and the list dropped from 38 to 29 NOC categories. There is a cap of 1,000 in any one of those 29 NOCs, up to a total of 20,000 applicants. 1 July 2011 the number will be started again until it is full.

I guess immigration feels that Canada is already full now and is therefore limiting immigration even more. I don't see them going back to the old relaxed state of things any time soon.

If your occupation is not on the list of 29, you would need a job offer (AEO) if you want to apply under the skilled worker program. You can also try the Quebec skilled worker program like zsashimi suggested. They have their own points system and they don't require a job offer (yet) nor do they have a list of occupations (yet). Thanks guys! Yes, I was also looking at Quebec as a possibility since I know a bit of French and I lived pretty close to the province when I was in Canada. But post application (if my application is approved), are there any binding conditions like me having to live in Quebec for some years? I mean, I know places in Ontario/BC/Halifax where I can get a job with my profile, but I doubt if there any jobs for me in Quebec :'(

One of the requirements of provincial nomination is that you intend to settle in the province. That being said, you could consider Ottawa-Hull area, for example.

Fact (i) Recession. (ii) All internationally training even those who fall on the 29 job list still have to retrain in canada to be able to practice, most of my friends are Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and are either working in Rims or surviving to get the accreditation. It will be a long way for an engineer to practice here. Thats what I Have learnt so be prepared, your foreign university certificate does not ring bells to employers unless you go back to uni in canada to top up or get 4 credit. Just my thoughts.

You don't have to settle in Quebec, after landing you can move to any other province.

Hi martha,

Regarding the situation of engineers in canada as you said about your friends, are they all internationally trained and experienced? My situation is that i currently live and work in US. i am a civil engineer by profession here. I did my MBA and masters in civil engineering, both in US too, then working for last 5 years. I also have a professional Engineering (P.E) license in US. My undergrad studies in civil engineering was in India though. I understand i have to be licensed in Canada and i am working towards it from now with all the applications. So my question is Canada do not even accept US education, US work experience? I really hope they atleast acknowledge our US Engineering license and in the meantime we can get our canadian license. I talked with the canadian licensing board they seem to waive off many things who have US license. But i am not sure how the employer would treat. Do you have any idea or do you have any friend having similar situation like me?I got my pr card and am planning to move to canada soon. I have seen one thing its veryy rare chance that someone will get a job offer in canada while sitting in US. But again, i mayb wrong. i hope i am wrong

They send by either means mail or post but i guess this is a wrong thread to ask the qustion thats why you are not getting many response. I got mine through mail but my friend got his through regular post

Hi there,

You are currently on the right truck. Getting your accredetials waved coz they are from us thats good. So go ahead and get the license from there then you can right aways start applying for jobs thats when you will get to understand the requirements for getting a job onto your field. Best of luck. Most people go through re training, or job search programmes thus then they get a placement/experience and then through that is when you get a job...
