Hi everyone,

My partner and I applied for Outland common law sponsorship on the 8th of December. We used courier service from, London U.K. and therefore were able to see that the application has been signed for in Mississauga on the 11th of December.

We are now waiting for receive an email confirmation from CIC in order to proceed and create a sign in account (which we understand is crucial). Is the confirmation necessary before we proceed with creating the account? In other words, We are both starting to worry as we still have not heard anything.

Any help is appreciated!

Yes, it's necessary, and it takes about 6 to 8 weeks for the first communications, so you've got a bit of a wait ahead.

Oh my, that’s a fair bit of time. Thanks!
I remember reading somewhere on the CIC website that it takes up to five days and therefore was starting to worry.

Just to make sure I understood everything fully, we would not received an email prior the 6 to 8 weeks period to link the application? After we eventually receive an email we would be able to then like the application and stop receiving any information by post?

I’m sorry, this is making us paranoid haha

Once you receive Acknowledgment of Receipt, you are invited to link the application. It says you must link the application within 5 days in order to receive additional documentation requests and upload said documents through the online tooling.

You can, in fact, link the application at any time in the process. We linked 7 months in with no issue, but we were not able to upload documents through the tool any longer. This was never a problem for us as we mailed everything in.

Don't panic if you have trouble linking. It's not mandatory, and there are ton of tips and tricks that will help you - the system can be finicky.

Even without linking, all communications came for us through email, not post.

Additionally, you will be able to check the application status here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-status.html

You do not need to link to use this service, but you will need your Unique Client Identified and/or File Number that CIC will provide to you.

Thanks so much! The website is definitely very finicky!

Just to check again, when we paid the Application fee we were given a receipt number. That receipt number cannot be used for checking the application status, right? The Unique Client Identified and/or File Number that will be provided by CIC would allow us to check the status and ultimately we would have to wait for that confirmation email to receive it?

Also, so we get an idea about the timeline ; it will be 6-8 weeks to receive a confirmation, then shortly after my partner will be approved as a sponsor and the we would be contacted about medical checks and police certificates?

Thanks again!

Yes, you have to wait to receive those numbers with the AOR.

After that you will receive sponsor approval as well as get medical request, schedule a request, and police check request, as you said :)
