Leaving Current Job After Applying for Permanent Residency

Hello everyone,

I'm expecting an invitation to apply for Permanent Residency under the CEC program. I have been working for my current company for the last 2+ years, and I do no have a LMIA that ties me to this current position. My current points in the pool are 466, and I'm hoping to receive an invitation in the next round.

I have no interest in staying with my current company for various reasons. I recently came across a great opportunity and received a job offer from another company.

Can anyone let me know if I am free to leave my current job? Will me leaving my current job pose any handicaps in the application process? I have already obtained my pay stubs that show the number of hours I have worked since I was hired. Like I mentioned above, I have 2+ years of work experience with this company, and I don't have a LMIA.

Thank you so much for your help!

Yes. Once you apply for PR and have your AOR, you can apply for a bridging open work permit, which allows you to change your job when it's issued to you. It can take about four months until you get it.

As long as you have an open work permit, you are free to take the new job.

By open work permit, do you mean that a working holiday visa would count as open?

I'm in a similar position to OP. I received an ITA in the most recent round and am working in a job I've been in for about 6 months. My previous job was for 13 months (same position but different company) which was what qualified me for CEC.

My current job is listed as part of my employment history but like OP I don't have an LMIA for it. I'm not particularly happy there and am hoping to return to work for my former employer, but I'm worried that might impact my application. AFAIK my working holiday visa allows me to work for any employer, so I'm assuming that means it is open.

If you currently hold a work permit (open or closed) and you are living and working IN Canada, and then apply for PR IN Canada, then you can apply for a new Bridging Open Work Permit. The BOWP gives you the chance to continue working until a decision has been made. But you must be IN Canada to apply and currently hold any work permit.

Not an expert on the program, but I believe they are all "open," yes.

As long as you're not claiming points for a valid job offer, changing employers has zero impact on CEC applications. CEC is designed as pass/fail - you either pass at the time you apply, or you don't.
