Leaving Canada while waiting for PR approval

Hi Folks, I just have a general question here. Are you allowed to leave canada while you're still waiting for PR approval?. I am currently on a Visitor Record, my visa however has expired, so i need a new one for re-entry i guess. And I applied under PNP program, the estimated final decision time should be somewhere around August. I have read thru a lot of threads and even called CIC myself, but ppl seemed to have different answers. Has some experience this before or know the answer? Any help would be deeply appreciated!
