Lawyer misled and lied

My boyfriend is here on a visitor visa, we paid a lawyer to do an extension so he could stay a year here which would be grounds for a common law application but we only now found out that the lawyer lied. He never put in any documents and every time we ask about it he would say everything is ok. There is a back log. Then he wouldn’t take our calls and have people call from his office and reassure us that everything is ok but that was a lie. Yesterday after we threatened to report him he sent a receipt of a TRP dated and paid for yesterday. We ask what was the receipt for and it was then he mentioned TRP which we knew nothing about. We are very worried and concerned about him being deported or our chances of our common law application being rejected. Please help us. What should we do?

When did his visitor status expire?

It's too late to restore status in that case.

However inland sponsorship is certainly still feasible while a person is out of status in Canada. I would get that application submitted as soon as possible after you have hit the one year mark. Move over to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum and look for discussions on this topic.

Ditch the lawyer / consultant and report this individual. TRPs generally take around 2 years to process and most likely won't help the situation at all. Get the sponsorship application in as soon as possible.

Do you think that he will get deported if I call IRCC to inform them of this situation?
What would be the purpose of that call? I don't see what it will accomplish.

To inform them that we did attempt the extension but it was the lawyer who misled and lied about the application. I also don’t want any problems arising knowing that right now he doesn’t have status here but I’m applying for common law

Include an LOE with this information when you submit the sponsorship application. That's the right place to include an explanation.
