Once you have sent in your application, are you required to stay in Canada until you get your citizenship? Or can you actually take a week or two vacation to the states, for example, during the time of the submitted application and their decision?

You can take vacation. Do not worry. :-)

Yes, you can as long as you maintain your PR status abroad.

Please read these two links carefully:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/become-after.asp

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=911&t=5

I hope it answers your question.

Yes you may. I would suggest going abroad by the time CIC receives the application. As soon as they start processing it, which will appear on ECAS as in process, i'll stay put in Canada up until the Oath. A 1 month vacation from the time CIC receives and opens your mailed application will be enough IMO. As soon as your back, then you'll just sit back, wait for progress on your application. This is based on our experience.Good luck.

I am goint on vacation 4 6 weeks, do i need to inform cic and how would I inform cic?

please call cic call centre along with your application file number and tell them that you are going for vacation from such to such date. They will make a note on your file.

Taking vacation should not be a problem, don't worry many do this and you can also do this :)
