Landing Question/Settling Delayed - Spousal Outland US Application

Hi,

As a Canadian, I sponsored my US husband for Permanent Residency. We were approved and received my husband's PPR (PP Received) in the spring of 2018. We have until November to land.

We were planning to move in late summer or fall of this year, squarely in the November deadline, however, work in the US has complicated things slightly, and our move has been delayed until 2019.

Can we go to the border office in Victoria before November, land, get the passport stamped and only stay for a week or two, and then return to the US to continue to wrap up our life so we can move more permanently later?

I have read that when you land you have to give them a Canadian address (we don't have one yet) and can expect to get a PR Card 3 months later. Can we delay the address and the PR card until we are ready to settle in 2019?

Basically, it's a question of whether Landing and Settling can be decoupled.

Thanks for your guidance on this.

Quick answer is yes.

You can 'land to activate PR' in one trip, then on a later trip 'land as settler' and declare all of your goods accompanying / goods to follow.

You can 'land to activate PR' and NOT supply a Canadian address, in which case you will have 180 days to do so, or pay a charge. As you guessed, they will NOT send the PR Card to a non-Canadian address.

What you have described is pretty common as few people can sell up completely in a few weeks / months and do all the landings at the same time (although it is ;possible to do so if you can or if you wish).

Some useful reading on precisely this here:

This link also contains a link to the all important 'official' CBSA document that describes the distinction between these two different types of 'landing'.
