I know this is possible, and all goods in my home would be listed, as well as our vehicles, as they wouldn't not be going until we went.

My question is in regards to those things which we'd acquire in the meantime (our home has not sold - though we have till June to land). These would/could fall under my husbands 'returning Canadian citizen goods and thusly not ever really be a concern if I understand it correctly, right?

Also our children are first time citizens entering at that point as well would they have a level of exception too? Not that I think we'd acquire 10k in goods, haha to start with.

There is some debate about whether or not goods you acquire after landing but before setting up residence in Canada are settler's effects.

Essentially he'd not be returning until I move, but I can see where it could be debated.

Obviously, with 2 kids and a possible year before moving - your going to acquire new things.

1. To be included as settlers effects they must have been owned and used to be included on the GTF list. Items purchased/acquired after "landing" are subject to duty and taxes. There is an exemption for returning Canadian citizens. Read the following for settlers effects.

Thanks PMM.

Something to consider. IF we were to attempt this, it sounds like essentially it'd be MY things only, which would be perhaps to have duty. Dh could claim all the household things, and his belongings and the kids their own toys/clothes, ect.

Hi can_usa,

If you listed categories for household items like "housewares," "clothes" and "toys", I doubt they will quibble over trying to determine what's new and what was previously included. If you listed every single item then you might not have too much leeway.

What customs wants to prevent, in my own interpretation(!), is the acquiring of goods of a significant value (after landing but before settling) that a settler would want to be presented as tax and duty free. So don't go buying a new BMW, Harley, Rolex, and sound equipment that would blow the roof off the house and try to pass them off as things you already owned and listed. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about a few new books, toys, sweaters, etc.

To be safe you could compile a list as you acquire new items and decide if the change in value is significant just prior to your move. That way if you declare them (and not include them as your Dhs) as new all you'd have to do is assign a value and present the list.

Good luck with the home sale. I wasn't able to sell mine before moving so I acquired a local agent and rented it on an annual basis until the market recovered a bit. It might be an option for you to consider down the road as well. Allison

Thanks Alison.

Yeah it definitely would just be normal things you would acquire as you live day to day - clothes mainly. I have two kids who obviously will just keep getting bigger and bigger, haha!

Renting is an option, we talked about that . Or going for sale by owner and thusly being able to drop our price by commission we'd been expecting to pay the agent right off the bat and hope it sells. But that'd only work while we were still here -we have 5 more months.
