Hi All,

Hope you all are doing great, I recently got my CPR- Category - SW1 so (Yaay!!) and they have given me almost a year to complete my initial landing before the visa expires. I am currently holding a job outside the country and would like continue with work for a year before I finally move to Canada and complete the criteria of 730 days within 5 years. This was just a short background, I had the following queries based on my current situation. Hope you can guide me in the right direction.

1) When I initially land in Canada do I need to show my entire funds considering I am only landing for now and will move back in a year or so ?.

2) Should I show the funds that I will be bringing with me later ? Or should I be showing all my funds on the first landing ?

3) Can I open a bank account as soon as I land , considering I only have the CPR form and passport during my short stay?

4) When I am submitting the Personal effects document (BSF-186/BSF-186A) what is the kind of detail they are looking for ?
(Example : Can I just mention "Books" with an estimated CAN dollar value ? OR should I also mention how many books and their specific names)

5) Am I bound to file taxes after I get my PR card? Considering I will be out of Canada for about a year or so ? If so how do I go about it ?

6) Considering I am not settling right away after I land and wont be eligible to apply for "public health insurance card" since I have to be in the country for 3 months or so , should I apply for "private health insurance" ?

7) I will be landing in Toronto but later have to catch a flight to Calgary, how much time do you think the interview process will take ? So that I can estimate and book my connecting ticket ?

Lastly are there any other pointers that I need to be aware of , which has helped you over the years settling in Canada ?

Thanks

Hello Albert,

Congratulations on getting your confirmation of permanent residence!

When I arrived to Canada in 2013, I had a copy of my bank statement but they didn't ask for it at the airport. However, I would recommend you to have your bank statement ready just in case they ask for it.

To get more accurate and updated information about how to settle in Canada, I recommend you to visit nextstopcanada.ca They have information referral specialists that can help you through your settlement process. When you log in, you will be able to contact them through their online chat.

Good luck!
