Hi All,

I have a hypothetical question if you may say

I'm currently in India and I would like to go to USA, get my old car(this is when I stayed in USA 3 years back. rhis is 2010 car) and drive to Canada Border.
I want to get this car, instead of buying a new one in Canada partly vecause cars are costly in Canada vs USA
Do you see any problem in doing that?
Or do you think I should land directly in Canada get my PR and stuff sorted out and then go to USA and drive back my car?

Thanks in Advance

If you have a valid US visitors visa, no one is going to stop you from doing it. If it requires you to get a new US visit visa, this might be a challenge because telling an officer you want to go to the US to collect you old car doesnt really make for a great case.

That said, if you have the option of going to the USA and collecting your car to drive into Canada, I would definately think that is a great way to go because of the mobility you will have while you move to Canada.

if you plan to keep the car, register, insure and drive it in canada, you will have to EXPORT it from the us AND then import it to canada. also, in order to not pay taxes on the import, you must declare your car on your B4 landing form as a good coming with you or a "good to follow".

You'll need to also confirm you're the official owner of the car on title, and that you own it outright (no loans against it).

Also you'll need to get the car up to Canadian safety standards (i.e like daytime running lights) before it can pass a safety test to be imported.

There is no rush to officially import it, as long as you list the cars info on your "goods to follow" B4 forms. So it's ok to bring the car in as a US car when you land as PR (just keep the car insurance from US company in the meantime), figure out all the steps needed to export/import it, then go back to the border to make it official when you're ready.
