Hi experts,

So I landed on June 3 but might have to return to Hong Kong for my very sick grandpa before I get my PR card . Since it would at least take a month before I get my PR card even if I make an urgent request, I would like to know my alternatives.

I read somewhere in the forum that I could use my Travel Document for re-entering. But my work visa that I had was taken away by the border officer when I landed. I have, however, copies of the visa.

I also think, correct me if i am wrong, that I can cross the US-CANADA border by car with my CoPR. But, on the other hand, would need the PR card when arriving in the airport.

So my question here is, 1) should i fly out directly from Vancouver with my CoPR and a copy of my Working Visa that is expiring in Aug. or 2) Drive myself to the States and catch a flight there. and drive myself back into canada when i return.

thanks in advance.

Hi

From your previous posts, I don't believe you had a passport request, so I'm guessing you hold a visa-exempt HKSAR passport?

If so, then you don't need to do anything special to return to Canada without your PR card. You can board the plane on the strength of your passport like any visa-exempt visitor and present yourself as a PR when you reach Canadian immigration.

If you don't hold an HKSAR passport and are not visa-exempt, then you will need to either apply for a PR Travel Document in HK, fly back to the US and enter through a land border or wait in HK until your PR card arrives and someone here can mail it to you.

I don't believe that it's possible to request urgent processing of your first PR card, and the processing time is currently 3 months.

As a Canadian permanent resident, all your Canadian visas automatically became void when you "landed". Don't assume that you can use any copies. That was the reason that yours was taken off you by the border officer.
