To the woman who was wondering about settling in Victoria:

- it's a beautiful little city, great for kids, quiet and safe with a lot of parks
- rent is expensive, I believe the most expensive in Canada apart from Vancouver
- the climate is gentle
- as for working, it has all the advantages and disadvantages of a small town; fewer jobs, less competition; many of the jobs are associated with the government and as a new immigrant you may not be competitive for them
- as a nurse, you'll be able to work
- for cooking, I just don't know, but in my experience a trained cook can usually find a job, maybe even on cruise ships around here
@ keep-going: thank you soooo much! :)

Hi Peanuts: Agree with on-hold that Victoria is a lovely place to live. It is the capital of British Columbia and that is the reason for so many Gov't jobs (sadly Gov't is trying to control budget and many of their jobs have been cut). Nursing jobs however should not be that hard to get with the necessary credentials. The cruise industry in BC revolves mainly around the Alaska tourist season from early May till end of September and some ships' homeport in Victoria, more in Vancouver. Last year Seattle, in USA, absorbed some of our cruise traffic. BC Ferries provide multiple daily crossings between Victoria, Vancouver and the Gulf Islands (and further up the coast, but not commuter distance from Victoria). If your husband still wanted to feel the waves beneath his feet (and come home at night) that would be another place to look for employment. You might find that Vancouver had more possibilities for both of you to find jobs. I don't know how much the cost of living varies between the two cities. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how you get on.
@ pippin: very informative.... thank you so much.... :) we are still in dilemma as to where to land considering that we have kids with us thus i'm soliciting every bit of information that we can get. we intend to land by 2011 and we have been contemplating whether to it would be in alberta, ontario or bc. prayin' that we will be guided to where it will be the best for the family..... :)

seniors advice strongly to make Toronto the first hub...since there are more immigrants there which will help you integrate into Canadian culture better, more jobs, less expensive than Vancouvre etc...................once you are setlled and life is shaping out there you can look into other options...

hi haral! :) yah, i've read one of the posts by the great qorax that it would be easier for new immigrants to land in toronto. so far, toronto still outweighs other options. ;) million thanks for sharing your insights... ;D
