Hi,

Just need clarification on something. I worked for 11 months with a doctors office as a medical office assistant and although I am aware that the NOC # for this does not qualify me for CEC however, the duties I did were more akin to that of a medical administrative assistant which will qualify for CEC. My question is can I apply for the CEC based on the duties that I performed or would it have to be on the job title alone?

Further, I've since left that position and was interning as a legal assistant for a while till I got promoted, I work full time (more than 30 hrs a week) but as an independent contractor and have been doing it the last 10 months (5 unpaid/5 paid). Am I able to combine both of these jobs and apply for CEC?

Help from someone anyone everyone would be appreciated?

1. CIC is supposed to evaluate your position by job duties and responsibilities (not job title or position requirements). So as long as the letter from your employer included all relevant information and listed job duties/responsibilities that align with the skilled position, then theoretically it should be OK. However, many participants of this forum have been in a similar situation as yours, between the "unskilled" and "skilled" position, and it appears that CIC will often evaluate it as unskilled. This is particularly true if you have a lower wage/salary than the average for the skilled occupation.

2. Unfortunately, neither unpaid work ("volunteer") experience nor self-employment experience (independent contractor) are counted for CEC. But in general, yes, you can combine jobs, so if you were able to get hired as a full-time employee, you could possibly make up the difference...

I saw that with a couple of friends, unfortunately both rejected because VO went to the unskilled work because of the job title maybe because of salary
