Hello !! I am a B.E. hons. degree(4 years duration) holder from a reputed indian institute. I recently applied for M.Engg in a few universities. My cgpa is 6.66/10.0 n TOEFL iBT score is 110. I was thinking of keeping a backup option of enrolling into a graduate certificate course @ a college in ontario ( since im not sure ill get admitted to many unis coz of my grades). The colleges require an evaluation of my B.E. degree from WES Canada. Recently a friend of mine got his degree evaluated n he had 5.9 /10.0 n the results of the evaluation were 3.2/4.0. My question is dat how many universities recognize WES evaluations and can it help me in getting admission into a University program to complete my M.E. I would have gotten my WES evaluation done earlier but none of the University websites mentioned anything abt it !! So if any1 could shed some light on this matter plz ..... thnx in advance
P.S. on a side note does any 1 know any unis where my grades are acceptable coz the minimum any university asks is 70 % .
Peace
Hi,
Most Canadian universities have their own grading system and they follow letter grading of A+(top grade) to F (Fail), with A, B+, B, C+, C in between.
For Canadian students, when they ask minimum B grade in final 2 years of their 4 years B.E degrees, for admission to their Master degree programmes, they mention it as 70%.
But, don't be disappointed by it. Because
if you are an international student, particularly from the Indian subcontinent... then the equivalent percentage for corresponding grades will be VERY DIFFERENT FOR YOU.
Ofcourse, it may differ slightly university to university.... but remember... in general... if you have 1st class/60% in you B.E final 2 years, from countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh... you are eligible to apply... in MOST of the Canadian universities for their Master degrees. Some like UBC, requires min. 65% form candidates of India...to be considered for admission to their master degrees. It's a different thing.. you get admission or not..as the cut off may be much higher..BUT..YOU ARE ELIGIBLE to apply. Some Canadian universities even consider applicants having minimum 55% as they consider min. 55% from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh as B grade (like Memorial Univ., Univ of Manitoba etc.). While some universities consider applications of international students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh having minimum B+ as 1st class/60% (most top grade universities). For some Canadian universities.. 1st class from Indian subcontinent may even be considered as their A grade!
For example see these links:
Univ. of Manitoba grading:
http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/facultyinfo/assess/index.php
Univ of Maniotba grading chart for India:
http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/facultyinfo/assess/view.php?cid=20
Univ. of Toronto grading:
http://www.gradschool.utoronto.ca/Admissions/IDET.htm (select India)
Univ. of British Columbia (UBC) :
https://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/international-students/application-admission-international-students (choose India)
If you see in detail the graduate department websites of nearly all Canadian universities, they all have given international equivalent marks required by students of different countries.
So.. as a 6.6/10.0 CGPA holder from India, you are very well ELIGIBLE to apply to almost all M.E/M.Eng/MaSC. programmes of ALL Canadian universities (considering if you see 6.6/10/0 as 66% as they do in IITs... however IITians need min. 7.5 CGPA to be considered for admissions to master degrees of Univ. of Toronto, don't know why..but that's their rule). So, WES evaluation is not needed unless they specifically mention it on their graduate department website. What you need is..to check the international equivalent requirements for the universities you are applying to. Still, if you can't find it on the website... just shoot an email to the international office, and they will let you know the exact requirements for students from India. WES evaluation..how helpful it will be... no 1 knows... but am sure..it won't hurt either.
Best of Luck.
