Hi.
I have been living in Dominican Republic for the past 2 years with my boyfriend and we have been together for 3.5 years as a couple. I will be staying one more year in DR. We plan to get married sometime in July 2012, which I will then return to Canada and submit his application for Permanent Residency.

He got a visitors visa for Canada in October 2010 (single entry visa). We both came to Canada to spend Christmas with my family and then returned to DR together. It is not very often that a Dominican gets a visitors visa for Canada, so we were both very excited.

What we're thinking of doing is applying for a visitors visa again (this time multiple entry) around April or May 2012, before we're married and I return to Canada. In doing this we will submit the same information we submitted the last time he was granted a visa (on top of what he submitted for himself, also a letter of my employment in DR, which proved I too would be returning.) Even though I will only have employment up until June of 2012 in DR, we're hoping that this will still work and immigration won't know or care that my employment will be ending at that time and I will be returning to Canada. Now, I know chances of him getting the TRV are better this time since he already got one and proved that he returned to DR, but I'm still nervous. Also, what worries me is, if in the application for TRV we say, for example, that we want him to visit Canada in the summer (since he already came in the winter) and also that following that, that he has the option to come again at Christmas, or for important occasions (hence the multiple entry visa). However, I will still be living in DR up until August 2012, and so the TRV actually wouldn't be used in the summer time. Will this matter if we say that's when we wanted him to visit?? Will it matter if when we submit the application for PR (hopefully in August 2012) that he will have this new TRV and hasn't yet travelled on it but plans to in the future? Will it be seen as lying and affect the PR visa if we submitted the proof of my employment in DR for the TRV but then in the summer I move back to Canada? and, if we said he was going to come visit in the summer but doesn't come until the fall (say October or November) will that matter too? Does it matter if when he applied for the TRV he was single but then after when he goes to use it he's married?

We want the multiple entry TRV because it will make our time apart waiting for the PR to go through a lot easier. Dominican Republic processing time for PR is listed as 22 months. Most are completed around the year mark, but we want the option for him to come visit me, as well as me go and visit him. It will be a lot easier and cheaper for him to come visit me if he gets the TRV as we have accommodations to stay in in Canada whereas in DR we'd have to rent an apartment or stay in a hotel together (his family's apartment is tiny). As well, I'm a teacher and so I only get certain dates off, whereas he could come during the "off" months, which would also make it easier and our visits more frequent.

I hope I have made myself clear. I know it makes sense to me, but to an outside it might be confusing and jumbled. Thanks for any advice and/or guidance. It is much appreciated. If I need to clarify something, please let me know.

Tink

i wish someone could clarify for u, i'll b following maybe it's more clear for me too :) congrats on getting the visit visa first time, we were not that lucky :/
just 2 things to share: once someone from the embassy here told me that they could put a validity on the visit visa, like an expiry date, kinda to force u go when u declared u would go....so if he says he goes in june but than he decides to go in sept the visa might b expired already....i don't talk abt how long he can stay once he arrives but the timeframe until he goes...maybe not all offices work the same but just keep it in mind
second, the most important focus on ur sponsorship that's the long term goal and try not to make anything contradictory between his visit application and the sponsorship application
abt the status, they will see the change at some point but not sure if it will effect....but aren't u common-law already and not single? (that's what i understood from ur other posts, sorry)
also, maybe some other people could guide u on this route more but i read if the visa has 1 year validity than u could also apply through bufallo (shorter processing times) but not sure if this applies to visitors or maybe only students and temporary workers...also, don't know if multiple entry would b in this category, but maybe it's worth looking into it
hope things will clarify for u!! good luck :)

Sorry for the confusion. We have been together as a couple for 3.5 years. I have lived in DR (his country) for the past 2 years, however we have only just begun to actually live together in the same house, so we wouldn't be considered common law until July 2012 and we plan to get married at that time anyway. So for purposes of the TRV he would be considered single.

aaah ok sorry for asking :p overall i think we r becoming too paranoid with this forum and thinking what if like this or like that and making apocalyptic scenarios  logically i would just do the visit visa application in the same way as the 1st one and all should b ok....on the date u applied u would not be saying anything false: he is still single, u r still in DR, he wants to travel in the summer....after that day things could change, noone can be absolutely sure abt the future :) (that's why they refuse so many people (they believe many would change their mind and plan to stay in Canada :-X ))

HI. The first time I got visa was for single entry to visit my then boyfriend ( I stated that in my application).
The second time ,I got it for a year. Basically I submitted the same information, and he indicated that he wanted me to come summer and christmas (so they had to give me a year) and we included plane tickets for the summer. So I got it.
Definitely apply for the visa before you get married. Cause once you are married and they know they will be very hesitant to give one.So you need to time it properly. My visitor visa ended the same month that I got PR. So kinda guage your time line.

I think it will be OK too. When he applies for the TRV, everything he says on the application will be true. If he doesn't then travel until the fall, I don't think anyone would find that suspicious - plans change.

Great! Thank you all for your input. It has really put me at ease. So even though I won't be returning to DR with him after he comes on the TRV (as at that point I will have moved back to Canada) it still shouldn't be a problem or be seen as giving false information because at the time of submitting the application for TRV it will all be true.

Now, we just need as much luck as we had the first time and hopefully this time we will be lucky enough to get the visa again, but this time a multiple entry.

Thanks again.

I have another question to add onto this that just occurred to me now... In the application for a multiple entry TRV, should we mention that we will be getting married in July? (as the application will be made in May). I know we don't necessarily have to put that information, but if they then look back on the trv app when we apply for PR a few months later and didn't mention we were getting married in July, maybe that will raise questions for them. I'm probably looking into this way too much, but I want to be successful in our next trv attempt as we were with our first one.

I wouldn't. Try to make the application the same as the last time. People married to Canadians are usually refused a TRV. He's not planning to actually overstay the TRV, so by the time he has his interview he should have been to Canada and back more than once, thus showing he can be trusted.
However, let's see what the others think.

i would not either...considering how hard it is to get a trv, they might use any "excuse" to say no; from what i understood, u don't plan to marry in ca anyways, so it's not that u would lie abt the reason of going there...the reason is still to visit, the rest is details which they don't ask in the forms

the thing is anyone with a Canadian spouse or partner is seen by them as someone with higher risk of overstaying (never leaving)...even the ones with an application in process don't all the time get it although it should b clear that they need to go back for interview maybe, pack all their belongings, etc...u could swear on all Gods, they still want to take all the precautions

if we would have ever had any visit visa approved, the 2nd time around i would apply in the exact same way; it's like u would find a secret number to a magic box and only that number works to open it ;)

at the end, maybe no matter what u say, considering that he already visited before and left Canada they will easily approve this time around too but noone knows for sure; let us know how it goes :) good luck!!

Thanks missmini and Canadianwoman. We won't mention that we plan to get married then. We'll be sure to submit all of the same information... although his job has changed... hopefully that won't make too much of a difference.

I do remember though there's a spot where he has to check off his status, and on the old forms "engaged" was an option... Oh well. We can't do anything but try and hope for the best.

I'll let you know in May when we try again. Hopefully I'll have good news :)
