Hi all,

Just referring back to proposed change that was supposed to increase minimum PR residence obligation from 3 our of 4 years to 4 out of 5. Is that in effect now. We moved to Canada in November 2012. Should i be waiting three years or four years before i apply for citizenship. Thanks.

RO for citizenship is still 3 out of 4 years. This will be changing to 4 out of 6 years around June / July next year.

When you moved to Canada doesn't matter. What matters is when you apply for citizenship. If you apply before the new rule is in place, you'll fall under the 3 out of 4 year rule. If you apply after the new rule is in place, you'll fall under the 4 out of 6 year rule.

Since you moved to Canada in November 2012, you'll most likely fall under the new rule (4 out of 6) - unless you spent time in Canada immediately before becoming a PR.

Thanks scylla. According to many posts, new rule is going to take effect around June/July 2015 the latest?

The residency requirement is 3 out of 5 years. Then why is the Residency Questionnaire (RQ) asked for last 4 years only?

No - that's not correct.

PR Residency Obligation
- 2 years out of every rolling 5 years

Citizenship Residency Obligation
- Current: 3 years out of the last 4 years
- Future: 4 years out of the last 6 years

It's not 3 out of 5. It's 3 out of 4. That's why the RQ asks for the last 4 years.
