Hello everyone! My wife and I just had a baby (thank you), about 2 weeks ago. She has been registered a Korean name by her Korean family. She has just been given her English name, by her father (me) and we haven't yet registered the English name to the Korean embassy, however I will do my research on that subject soon.

For now, I need to know what I need to do to register her birth to Canada. My wife is NOT a citizen of Canada, and we are waiting another week before we can give her an x-ray to complete the Outside Canada Registration. Do I need to sponsor my child the same way I sponsor my wife? What are my next steps, I'm slightly a little lost here, haha.

Thanks everyone!

Dan.

Pre-Assessed..
A. For your baby to be a Canadian citizen from birth, you need to be a Canadian citizen and you need to have gained your citizenship either because you were born in Canada yourself or because you immigrated to Canada and were naturalized, even if you immigrated as a child with your parents.

B. The only case where a child born outside Canada to a Canadian citizen does not get citizenship is when the parent was himself born outside Canada to Canadian parents and inherited his citizenship from his parents.

If your case is A, then your child is a citizen and you need to apply for proof of citizenship for her, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp You will apply through the Canadian embassy. If you want to travel to Canada with your child before you get the citizenship card, you can apply for a temporary passport for her, also at the embassy. The citizenship card is not a passport. If you decide to wait for it, you should apply for a passport when you get it.

If your case is B, then you need to sponsor your baby for PR. Contact the visa office immediately in that case and tell them you need to add a baby to your wife's application.
