Is it practical to apply to Canadian IT jobs while in the US (I'm Canadian PR) ?

Hi everyone .. I got Canadian PR some months ago and am planning to move to Canada in June this year. My field is Software Development and these days I'm applying to Software Development jobs in Canada but am not getting much of a response. I'm wondering if this could potentially be because employers see that I have a US address mentioned on my resume ? To counter this I've put the following sentence on top of my resume:

"I’m a Canadian Permanent Resident planning to move to Canada in early June 2017 after graduating from Brown University."

However still I'm not getting contacted by Canadian companies. Is there something I'm doing wrong ??

Yes you are right, most of the companies would not contact you until you are physically present in Canada with a valid Canadian address and phone number.

But if that's true, how come people on this forum are able to get Canadian jobs before even landing in Canada for the first time ?

1. Those "people" do not indicate on their resumes that they'll only be present in the country in 7 months. If you were a recruiter, would you give consideration to an applicant that will be available in 7 months when you have 100s that are available immediately or in 2 weeks? Think about it!

2. Some of the individuals who have successfully landed jobs before they're present in the country simply had a real plan as opposed to submitting application after application. They connected with recruiters, explained their situation in addition to showing interest in particular positions. So the recruiters had such individuals on their record, and depending on how far out their arrival date was, they landed the job or the recruiter found them one a few weeks after landing. Obviously, they had to impress the recruiter...

Given your situation, the logical thing to do now is simply connect with recruiters - update your LinkedIn profile and start using it. If you don't have one, create it and request for endorsements from current and former colleagues - that makes a quick reference tool.

All the best.

Change your location on LinkedIn so that LinkedIn can suggest people in the profession and recruiters whom you can contact. Put a local Canadian address on your CV along with a VOIP Canadian number which you can get for reasonable prices. If they call you, speak to them. If you are invited for an interview, tell them that you are on a holiday and will be back in Canada in __ days. If they agree to interview via Skype or similar and make an offer, advance your trip and take the job.
