Hi there,

We were wondering if anybody knows if it is possible to apply for a study permit or get a work permit (thru company sponsorship) once we have submitted our common-law spousal sponsorship application? I am English and my fiancé is Canadian.

We still haven't decided whether to apply inland or outland as there are pros and cons to both, but if I was in Canada during an inland application and unable to work for the first step of the processing (after which I understand I should be able to get an Open Work Permit) would I be able to go to college or maybe even find work with a company that was willing to sponsor me?

We would be grateful for any information
Thanks

Practically zero reason to apply inland. If you apply inland you'll wait 11 months for a work permit, then another 8 months to full PR, all while having your travel restricted to Canada.
If you apply outland through London, could have your full PR in 8 months or so, and come and go from Canada during that time as you wish.

Either way you can apply for a study permit, or a work permit if you can find an employer willing to go through LMIA process to hire you.

I think you might also want to try for an IEC permit if you qualify or if there are any spots left.

Thanks very much for the info guys,

The main reasons that we were considering Inland was because we have been working abroad in a poorly paid job in tourism and heard that it may be better for my fiancé to get a job in her native Canada that is better paid and shows that she wants to reside there, and also so we would be able to be together for the duration of the process.

But I think we have decided on Outland now, seems like it should be faster and we will both still be able to travel, or my fiancé can still work in Canada and I can go in and out at least, it certainly would give more flexibility. I could also apply to study in Canada if I found a suitable college and course (or to work if I happened to find a sponsoring company).

I just looked into the IEC permit after you mentioned it, but unfortunately, as I am older than 30, I don't think that's an option for me.

Cheers
