Hi all,

I am an instrumentation engineer by profession, i had some oil and gas experience(oil drilling rig),but that was back in 2012,i am here in Canada for 2 years, during this period i only worked for 6 months in my engineering filed ,municipality infrastructure projects, not O&G.

I been looking for a job in Ontario for the last 6 months but no luck for far, I am thinking to move to Edmonton, I have no friends or any relatives to give me feedback about the job market for engineers,so i would appreciate if some one can share their experience and knowledge of Edmonton in particular and Alberta in General, is it good time to go there looking for jobs, is the oil and gas companies still laying people off.

One last question, i have my own car, what other options do I have other than driving all the way to edmonton,is there a shipment,if there is,how much it might cost and when shall be delivered, how about shipment by train while i am on board as well,is there such service.

many thanks.

It's hard to say for sure about the job market. It changes all the time and quite abruptly at times. Edmonton obviously is the center of O&G and Toronto / SW Ontario has a lot of manufacturing. I believe the current state is that Toronto/ SW Ontario has hotter job market now. From what I see about O&G in Sask, the bloodbath of layoff stopped and company is slowly starting to hire engineers while technicians and rig hands are slightly more sought after (many went home after being laid off and refuse to go back)

You can ship your car by train to Toronto but I doubt you will be onboard the same train though and its almost certainly more expensive than drive by yourself (Also Edm-Tor train is probably more expensive than flight)

Perhaps, instead of asking whether it is a good time to move, why not see if you can get a job in Edmonton (or anywhere else) before just upping and moving there. If you are already in Canada, it should be possible to search for jobs in other cities without actually moving there. Also might I add. Edmonton is not exactly a fun place to live in. Weather is especially foul (much worse that Toronto), so unless you are moving there for a specific reason, I would suggest look elsewhere. Good luck

Toronto is not for your profession. You need to check north. Most gas and drilling does happen in northern parts. But it is not just Alberta. Check also - Northern Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon.
Good luck.
