Hi Guys,

I just need to know if I enrol in one of the certificate courses in University of Alberta if it is allowed that an international student to enrol as part time student since this program is only part time and is open also for international students. Wat is the chance of having approved for student visa as a part time?

Thanks alot!

Study permit will not be given to part-time programs; that's the law. Most probably, the course you are talking about is for someone who is already doing a full time degree at UofA and can enroll in it as part time while being an international student.

Can yopu please suggest me a cheapest college or university where it is good to study. maybe one to year diploma course would be sufficient. I have earned my bachelors degree in ECE but I wanted to take a certificate or diploma in human resource management or business management because that is more inlined with my 5 years experience. Thanks a lot!

CIC/CHC will issue study permits for part time studies, but you would not be eligible to work on or off campus during your studies.

Eligibility Criteria: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-who.asp

Hey, could you please, share the source of this information that one can not get study permit on part time basis?

Diploma after a bachelors degree is not a wise option. It would most probably result in visa rejection. You should opt for Master's degree.

Thanks for your reply. I planning to take a different program (i.e. Human Resource Management Certificate or Business Administration Diploma) because this is more in lined with my experience. I am currently working in a Hotel Industry in Dubai for 2 years and has worked 3 years in Call Centre/Customer Service Industry in the Philippines. That is why I am shifting to different study.

Why would taking a diploma be rejected by CIC for study permit?

I can't find the doc that had this info (some fine prints somewhere). But here's the rule:

The applicant for study permit must be accepted to a full time degree without any conditions (that can be full filled prior to taking the visa like taking IELTS or completing the current degree). An international student with study permit can, if required, transfer to part-time while in Canada but those months will not be considered in counting toward the PGWP.

International students (requiring Study Permit from outside Canada CAN NOT enroll for any Part time course). It's against rules for schools to even offer any such admission.

The fact "international students" also includes foreign workers on working holidays visa mainly from Europe, are allowed to pursue part time courses along with work permit (only those courses which MUST NOT lead to a Degree).

Could you please share the reference? I couldn't find it anywhere. Are you sure you are not confusing it with work permit?

You have vast experience in a managerial role and you should justify your course via a strong SOP. Most students gets rejection on course mismatch when they apply to some courses other than their past qualification. However, I believe management courses shouldn't make any problem for you because of your previous experience.

The risk of rejection is higher when one do diploma after bachelors because it shows that the student wants to get settled in Canada after his studies and that is why he is opting for diploma option. VO's reject based of the reason that "i am not satisfied that he will leave canada after his studies" you can search a lot of cases similar to yours on this forum.

Reference:

Q: Is it possible to enrol in courses during my stay in Canada while under the IEC initiative?

Ans: Yes. However, the courses must be part-time and considered as personal development/growth. Your courses cannot be part of a university degree. If you are in Canada under the IEC initiative, you may enrol in language courses over a short period of time, i.e. less than six months.

This reference is helpful but this is not a generic answer. It is specific for IEC initiative which is something different from study permit. The eligibility criteria of study permit has nothing mentioned regarding Part-time/full-time.

3. I would like to study and work in Canada. Can I do this under International Experience Canada?

No. The goal of International Experience Canada is to discover Canada, not study. Travel and work experiences through IEC may not be combined with studies in a university degree or college diploma program. However, participants can take short-term language courses. For more information about studying in Canada and work opportunities as a student, visit Education Canada website.

Are you sure if I posted anything different?

I posted very clear cut in my post

"International students (requiring Study Permit from outside Canada CAN NOT enroll for any Part time course). It's against rules for schools to even offer any such admission.

1. International students can't get into any part time course (EXCEPT studying in the last semester OR IEC visa holders).

So, what's the difference? Do you think if I am trying to compare IEC with study permit holders?

The point here is not proving anyone right or wrong. The point here is that we still don't have any reference that points out that Study permit is for full time students only.
