Hi there.

I'm a 26 years old Chinese and trying to immigrate to Canada. I have 4 year work experience and used to work as an editor, a public relation specialist. Now I'm a small business owner. But the agency said it's hard to get a job with my work experience in Canada. My major at University was English and my GPA was not high, about 75%. They recommended me to study an one-year-program of Hospitality Management in college...

Is easy to get a job with this diploma?

BTW, I have a chance to work in McDonald's as a manager trainee in China. Is the work experience of McDonald's in China accepted in Canada?

Thanks!

The entire hospitality industry is large in Canada, but unfortunately many of the positions are low paying. I'm guessing they suggested this area of study because of the large number of entry/low paying jobs that would later be available.

Re McDonalds, I suspect that many of their trainee programs are global run, as they like to have the same image for customer whether you walk into a McDonalds in Canada vs France vs China -- so I could see how some of your experience would definitely be transferrable, but of course there are no guarantees. If you work for McDonalds in China I would investigate a few weeks/months later through their intranet what options they offer if employees move and want to work for the company in another country.

Regardless of whether yr qualification is recognized or not, which any qualifications other than Canadian and North American, are usually not that recognizable in Canada (depends on profession as well). U will definitely need a Canadian qualification for upgrading to be employable in Canada. Do not expect to get a job without the proper Canadian qualification here in Canada, especially those with credentials from developing or less developed countries. Pursing a Diploma in Canada would be a good option as it will open doors for u to enter the industry easier.

As for the hospitality, retail and food service industry, it would be best to land yrself in provinces that has a demand for such people, such as in Vancouver (BC) or Banff, Jasper (Alberta), Montreal (Quebec) areas. These areas will have a higher demand for the hospitality industry professionals.

Thanks for suggestions, guys. It's really hard to make a decision... Yeah maybe I should get a diploma. But it's not easy for me to get a visa through applying a Hospitality Management program... 'cause I'm a undergraduate....

Unfortunately your McDonald manager trainee experience in China will not count towards your overall work experience. You need to be a Canadian McDonalds manager trainee to get a job as a Manager in Mcdonalds. Again it boils down to whether you have Canadian experience.

True indeed, any countries experience other than the US, will not be recognized here in Canada and its also not Canadian experience, even in some industries, the employers do not even recognize US experience and they consider only experiences in Canada, so those from China or India or any developing economies or even those from UK are not recognized here at all!
