Hello everyone, I am a Canadian on a tourist visa currently residing in Indonesia with my wife. We have known each other for 2 years exactly on this date (Sept 27) and earlier this year (March) we tied the knot here in Indo. We are still in the process of getting our marriage certificate which is taking longer than expected because of a previous marriage she had been in. Now with recent news from the civil registry in Indo it may be until late next year until she is officially divorced from her previous marriage(Indonesia uses ''rubber time" like most asian country's). I have a new job in Canada starting November this year and I had planned for her to come to Canada in April as a tourist and have a wedding in Canada during the summer. Will it be difficult to sponsor her because we cannot prove we are married? Is a marriage certificate necessary? She has many ties back home including a house and a 4 year old son. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

1. Well if she is not divorced from her 1st husband, then your marriage to her is null.
2. It is unlikely that she would be issued a TRV to accompany you, being "married" to 2 people at the same time. She can apply but there is no guarantee that it will be issued as CIC/CHC will think that she would have no intention to return after a visit.

Thank you for your response. If sometime between now and spring next year we are able to show a divorce letter, I assume it would help our chances a bit? Thanks.

Hi Mike,

I applied and received a TRV for my Indonesian wife without sending a marriage certificate but we were in Qatar and she was under my sponsorship so I guess they did not need the indo certificate. I have spoken with a few guys in bali and they have brought their indo girlfriends to Canada for visits by saying "girlfriend" and providing a letter of employment from an Indo company. I understand that if they were married, it would be more diifficult for a TRV because there would be questions as to what would make your wife leave canada....you are there and she would want to stay? I guess my wife was given a TRV because I am employed in Qatar so they would expected her to leave canada to be with me in Qatar (and she did)

We did consider staying in canada but it was risky with no appeal possible and a long wait for PR inland so I am back in Qatar and appying for the PR from here. Although we had a muslem ceremony in Indo last year, we did not register with the civil authorities so had a BC Civil ceremony when we were in Canada in August.
