I complete my 3 years of experience at my current job on 15/09/2017 but CIC already granted me the points and we are still in August. Is this normal? This is because I received my ITA today unknowingly because I thought I still only had 2 years experience and I'm thinking about declining it for now just to be safe.

Any input on this matter would be appreciated.

This is completely normal. Their system has margins granting points. Because they calculate your experience based on the hours too. You may have already qualified for 3 year experience based on hours.

According to:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/apply-who.asp

Your experience must be at least

  • 12 months of full-time work
    • 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours), OR
  • equal amount in part-time hours, such as:
    • 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
    • 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than one job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)

The above is incorrect and will only lead to rejection. There's people who think that since they work 40 hours per week they can meet X years of work experience sooner than those who work 30 but that's wrong as an applicant cannot claim more than 30 hours per week of work experience.

You must work for a period of 3 years in order to claim those points, the system calculates work experience by month so it tends to grant X years of work experience before the applicant actually completes it. If you submit your eAPR before completing 3 years of work experience AND your score falls below the cutoff score then your application will get rejected.

It is not based on hours at all. This is the 2. post today with this incorrect information for the same guy:(((.
The system counts the months only. So the starting month was 09/2014. That is the first month. According to the system 08/2017 is the 36th month. I had similar issue ( I got ITA 4 days before I had had 1 year canadian experience). I did not decline my ITA, but my application is still processing so I can not tell you for sure that is fine in that way.
If you decide not to decline that be sure that when you submit your application you have to have the correct 36 months, (with at least 30 hours/week ).

Thanks a lot for this info! Really appreciated.

That's what I initially thought, but I checked my application and all the information provided was correct. I have started my current work in Sept 2014 and it's only August 2017 now but they already granted me the extra 25 points. So either the CIC made a mistake or it's as the above poster mentioned I guess.

I'm thinking about declining just to be safe, even though all the information I provided was correct so far:

Qualified for work on August 2014
Started current work on Sept 2014

For several months now my application was sitting on 428 points, but the system automatically upgraded my score without me knowing. I am a bit skeptical of CIC considering the hours worked per week because I don't see that info anywhere in the application, but maybe I am not remembering correctly.

The system does provide points in advance (as it is garbage) but it is still your responsibility to ensure you're claiming the right amount of years of work experience.

The other posters advice that "You may have already qualified for 3 year experience based on hours" is false.

I think it's wise to just play it safe then and wait for another invitation. For what it's worth, in my employment reference letter, they listed my starting date on 15th Sept 2014, but the CIC application only mentions the month when I started, without the exact day. Is it safe to consider I have 3 years experience when September starts or should I wait till after the 15th?

You'd still be short of three years of work experience by couple weeks when considering the start of September.

Wait until the 15th.

Will do. Thanks for all your help and input.

Meanwhile, my score is still pretty high and I kinda feel bad about taking one of the ITA spots until the 15th, but what to do.

Hi Del, thanks for that input. Though I suspect the fact, it is always safe to wait until the 3 years are completely covered. (After that no one can argue that you have insufficient work experience.)

One more thing though, I started my work in mid May 2014 and got my ITA on March 1, 2017 and submitted on March 22. In the GCMS notes that I ordered. The case analyst counted my work experience as 2 years and 11 months while determining my eligibility (i.e. my work experience would be 3 years from April 1st) and later the officer was satisfied with that. I believe that they grant you 1 month margin for calculating the experience.

Lastly, just to avoid the confusion, I was still granted 2 yrs of exp instead of 3 as I got my ITA on March 1st instead of in April.
