Hello everyone,

I am currently residing in Canada and am about to flagpole in Niagara Falls to obtain my work permit since I already got my POE letter 1 month ago. I realize that I need to show at the border certain documents such as proof of funds, POE letter, passport and insurance. With the latter I wanted to ask for some suggestion where I could find affordable insurances (if possible online).
I am from Germany and covered by a german insurance company but since I am a student I have to re-apply every semester (6months). Thats means I can NOT get a notice from my insurance company which shows that I will be covered for my one-year contract starting end of November 2014.

Could somebody give me some advice which insurance is an affordable one for me.

Thank you very much in advance.

Flo

I think they most likely will check for my insurance and that I will be covered for the duration of my stay in Canada, especially when I'm flag poling..

How about getting a notice from your German insurance provider showing that you are covered for the next 6 months? Then contact the office that deals with provincial health coverage to see if you are eligible. If yes, ask for any official documentation and take with you.

Generally, with a 1 year work permit you should be eligible for provincial health coverage. Some provinces require a 3-month wait but in mine, health coverage begins the first day of arrival.

How long have you been in Canada as a student? Do you have a valid study permit? In my province, foreign students who have lived in the province for 13 consecutive months are eligible for provincial health coverage. It's renewable yearly as long as the student has not been outside the province for 30 consecutive days. You may want to check with the same office because you may already be eligible and not know it.

If all the above don't work, contact Bluecross or Flexcare to get something for the first 3 months. Once your provincial coverage and any benefits at your job kick in, you may cancel the policy with Bluecross/Flexcare. Goodluck.

As FYI... if your job involves interaction with the public e.g. healthcare worker, teacher, etc then you may also need to pass an immigration medical exam. A list of designated medical practitioners can be found on CIC's website (the exam can not be done by just any doctor).

thanks SenoritaBella for your reply.

I'm not a student in Canada. I'm enrolled in a German university in order to get a student insurance coverage.
I will look into the possibility of getting provincial health coverage and yes, after 3 months I will be eligible for some sort of benefits from my employer. However, I read somewhere that the CBSA sometimes denies workpermit with included health coverages because in case you're being fired you would not be covered by any insurance. So they want to see alternatives.

I am looking right now into travel insurance from 'worldwide insure' an online insurance. Anyone has experience with that company? I guess I will go with them for the remainder of my stay after my German insurance company drops out.

@SenoritaBella: I'm going to work as an engineer so I won't most likely interact with the public. But I do made and passed an immigration medical exam :) but thanks for the information.

Is it allowed to have 2 insurances in order to make sure that I am covered a whole year in Canada?
I am already in Canada and have an insurance until March 2015 but need another one until the end of November 2105.

Would that be possible?

Thanks. Flo

I don't see why it would be a problem, but you can ask both insurance companies if you can keep each of their plans at the same time.
