I (29/male/Canadian Citizen) met my girlfriend (20/fem/Turkish on a study permit) in November 2015, we have been living together in Toronto since April 2016 for the most part.

We got married on Oct 15, 2016 in Toronto and I would like to sponsor her.

I have looked around the forum, read a lot of threads and still, I have lots of questions. I would greatly appreciate your help.

Do we need to wait for the marriage certificate to submit our sponsorship application? How long will that take from the day of marriage?

Do we request her police record from within Canada?

Will we apply for sponsorship, permanent residence and work permit at the same time?

The processing times say it will take 26 months. Does that mean she will get her permanent residence in 26 months? I was told by an immigration lawyer that it would take about a year.

During the process must we live together the whole time? Can I work in the states while she stays studying here?

What are the main milestones during the process?

I really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Do we need to wait for the marriage certificate to submit our sponsorship application? How long will that take from the day of marriage? Yes, you need the marriage certificate. The timelines vary greatly.

Do we request her police record from within Canada? An RCMP check? No, those are not required. She will require a police check from her home country.

Will we apply for sponsorship, permanent residence and work permit at the same time? If you are applying inland, then you submit the sponsorship package and the OWP application together.

The processing times say it will take 26 months. Does that mean she will get her permanent residence in 26 months? I was told by an immigration lawyer that it would take about a year. Inland has been getting faster, but still over a year (as far as I know).

During the process must we live together the whole time? Can I work in the states while she stays studying here? If you apply inland, one of the requirements is that the couple be living together in Canada. If you wish to work in the US, you would need to apply outland.

What are the main milestones during the process? AOR is acknowledgement of receipt. Later on you'll get AIP, which is approval in principle. Then Decision Made and your landing interview. This is assuming you apply inland.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Let me know how your process goes.

I'm thinking of sponsoring my partner as well. We wanted to avoid having to do that, since it's quoted at 26 months long - but if her Express Entry doesn't work out(she wants to get PR on her own, and much quicker through this method....and a lot less paperwork hassle), then we're going to have to look into this.

Is the 26 months for inland, an overestimate? Have people actually been getting it done in over a year?

Express Entry...PNP...Spousal Sponsorship, so many avenues with varying degrees of potential success. Common part is that they're all cost $$, and if you run various options in parrellel, you're not getting any refunds.
