Hi all,
after reading lots of posts in this forum, it's almost my obligation to share my case with you all.
I was sponsored by my common law partner (she is from Argentina but is PR) after a year of living together in Vancouver, BC. I entered Canada with a student visa.
I did the medicals before sending the application. I didn't pay for the PR fee before hand, but if you're pretty sure they're going to issue the pr, you can do it. Also applied for the open work permit, which at the end I didn't use it because my PR was issued almost at the same time as the WP.
Here are the dates:
PR application received on July 23, 2009.
They started processing the application on August 19, 2009.
Medical results have been received.
A decision has been made and you will be contacted.
They sent me a letter on February 2, 2010
I realized of this when I check the cic website during february. I wanted to forget about my application so I never checked the website or anything. Beside that, we left Vancouver and hitchhiked all across Canada, camping everywhere, leaving really cheap, meeting a lot of people and knowing more about the country and their culture.
We ended up in the city of St John's in Newfoundland, a place much cheaper than Vancouver so we decided to wait there for the decition on our application.
During february I called cic and told them about my new address.
On february 25th, they sent me a letter again, this time from St John's stating that I was going to be contacted soon.
A very friendly IO called on March 8th and she gave me the date for the interview, March 11th. Also told me to bring my passport, two migration pics, another form of ID and the $490 fee.
On march 11th, I went to the local office and after 15 minutes I was granted Permanent Residence by the same friendly IO that called me on March 8th. Surpraisingly, at least for me, she let my common law partner get in the interview room... but I never had a real interview, she already had my pr document issued and the only thing she did was double check with me the information on this document.
After she gave the document, we had a chat about the differences btn the west coast and the east coast... of course she asked me, why I moved to St John's, but that question was more in the curiosity side of her.
When we left the immigration building if felt a big relief and happines at the same time.
That's basically my case. Hope this help to anyone out there.
Good luck
