Hi, I am already a PR and eligible to file for Canadian citizenship. I have a question about filing information about parents. My mom has changed her name and had new name or her passport (Not-Canadian). She already had tourist visa issued to her. On my passport, its her older name. I have a doubt if I should fill her new name or older name which is on my current passport.

Also, my sibling is in Canada on study permit and has plan to settle here. He has mother older name on his passport too. As of now, there is provision of getting 15 points if your sibling is already a Canadian PR/Citizen. If I go for new name would that be an issue due to name mismatch or anything like that. Please advise.

Hi,

If I were you, I would have kept the same name of the mother in the citizenship application as in my existing passport, with an assumption that the Canadian "systems" would have access to only the details limited to what I had previously given them regarding my parents and family as part of the PR processing and they would have no way to know about the mother's name change unless it was made known to the Canadian "systems" before the citizenship application for whatever reason. This suggestion is purely on the assumption that all your records with both Canada and elsewhere in the world is clean.

The "lengthier" way to make the citizenship application without any iota of doubt would be to get your passport(non Canadian) updated with mother's new name and then use your updated passport for Canadian citizenship application. The reason I am saying this process is lengthier is due to the added time taken for updating the non Canadian passport + the extra time required to clarify the doubt created due to two names of the mother in the minds of the citizenship application processing officer/s.

I will also suggest to wait for other's opinion as I did not have this situation in my application. May be someone with same situation as your's who has already applied could have more insight than just my opinion.

All the best with your application.
