I applied for a visa about 2 months ago. I have airline tickets in 16 days that I can still cancel for a refund. This refund expires in 2 days. Is there any way to find out if my visa application will be answered before then, or should I just cancel these tickets now?

No way to find out. Where did you apply from. Even if approved tomorrow, you still need passport stamping. I would cancel.
