Hello,

Could someone please tell me what the process is to apply for Indian PCC in the U.S? I live in Chicago. I found some information on this Web site - http://indianconsulate.com/page/display/86/17, but I am confused about a few things.

1) However, the passport and the document (which is to be attested) should be presented in original. - What do they mean by document to be attested? What documents do I need to take?

2) Do they keep the passport with them when I apply in-person? If so, when do I get it back? What if I need to travel out of the country? I know for sure that I'll have to travel at the end of this month, then end of August and then sometime in December.

3) How long does it take for the PCC to be issued?

You can apply at the Indian Embassy or Consulate in your current country of residence. You would need to submit the original passport for obtaining the PCC as they will stamp your passport (PCC for Canada). You need to check with the outsourced agency of the Indian embassy or consulate about all the time period taken to provide you the PCC.

Thank you. Do I submit my passport and leave it with them through the whole process ? Or, can I take my passport to them to be stamped once they get my PCC?

You have to leave it with them completely for that time period and they will return it to you along with the PCC.

Thank you! Anyone with experience applying at the Chicago consulate or any other consulate in the U.S.?

How long does it take? Approximately? I really would like to know as I have a trip coming up in August.

If the PCC is still not received by then, can I get my passport back from them for the trip?

Also, do I need to tell them specifically for which time period I need my PCC? I last lived in India for more than 6 months in 2008. Do they need that information?

Not required.

Thank you! Does anyone know how long the PCC is valid? How new does it have to be when I apply?

If India is your current country of residence, then the PCC will be valid for 6 months. If India is not your current country of residence and you have left India and not returned back, then the PCC will be valid indefinitely.

Stanlee - Thank you very much! My current country of residence is not India, but I have gone back there a few times to visit family (the longest stay not exceeding 3 months). Is my PCC still valid indefinitely?

Also an update - I went to the Chicago consulate on Friday and was able to get the PCC the same day.

Your PCC is valid for as long as you don't enter India. If you visit India, you will need a new PCC. Getting an Indian PCC is still WAY simpler than getting a FBI PCC.

Thank you. If I need to go to India before I get an ITA and I still apply with this PCC, will my application be rejected? Or, will they ask me to produce a new PCC?

You can always update your documents after an ITA is issued and before you submit your application. This won't change your total FSW/CRS points.

Yes, I meant when submitting my application, if I submitted an older PCC, will my application be rejected? Or, will they request a newer version?

If your Passport has an Indian immigration stamp with a date later than your PCC issue date, then I suspect it might be an issue. I can't see why they would know/care otherwise. You can always update your PCC at PPR/landing stage. If it's clean, it shouldn't matter at all.
