Hey there,

I have completed my doctorate in Germany and currently working as a Postdoc (total time spent in Germany : 7 years). I am currently married with my wife pursuing her career in the United States. Since moving higher up the ladder in Germany for an immigrant is rather difficult, I expect to move to Canada to further my career in academia or industry (Semiconductors). Currently, I am on German PR with the ongoing waiting period, I could obtain a citizenship in the next two years. My question is as follows:
1) Does currently holding a German PR create a problem while applying for Canadian PR via Express Entry?
2) Although married, I would first enter Canada by myself and my wife would follow me later all going well. Do I still have to show the required funds (Bank Balance) for two individuals or one (myself) at the time of application?
3) My wife currently on an H1B and is in the process of applying for her I140 (USA PR). Could you recommend whether she should file a PR along with me or follow me later (advantages & disadvantages or experience perspective)?

Any suggestions, guidelines or perspective based on known experiences are highly anticipated.

Thanks in Advance.

No

If you show spouse as unaccompanied then No.
3) My wife currently on an H1B and is in the process of applying for her I140 (USA PR).
i140 is not USA PR. USA PR is GC. There could be years between filing i140 and GC depending on the category. She is not filing for PR she is filing to be in queue of PR. In any case you probably knew this.

Personal choice. But advantage is you both get PR together and can move to Canada together rather than going via the spousal sponsorship route which could take longer.

Side note you probably need to think this through a bit more. Both Germany and USA are better options than Canada in some respect. If Career is your criteria USA is better if your wife can get GC and you can move there. Also, being in EU has its own advantages (current situation notwithstanding)

This question doesn't make sense. As per your post in Nov'19 you already have Canada PR. And you make it sound like you are just applying?

1) No impact.
2) You must show funds for 2 people.
3) Really your choice.

This post was put on behalf of a colleague who wanted some reliable information from a well known community.

Many Thanks for an honest opinion and broader perspective.

Does it make a difference if the bank statement is obtained from the wife's account in the States and I apply from Germany.

If your spouse is not accompanying, funds in her name can't be used.

If your spouse is coming with you, you can count money you have together in a joint account. You may be able to count money in an account under their name only, but you must prove you have access to the money.
