I had a massive brain fart when I was paying the fees online for my husband's common-law partner visa. I paid the $75 Sponsorship Fee, but I selected the $550 Spouse, Common Law Partner, Conjugal Partner fee rather than the $475 Principal Applicant fee.
I saw on the CIC payment website the following advice:
If it's best to do the full refund, does anyone have any idea how long it will take to receive the amount back? Not a huge concern, but it would be nice to know how long my until it would be refunded on my credit card.

We haven't submitted the application yet, but need to by early next week as the police clearances are coming close to the 3 month validity period. Would it be best to request a refund for the incorrect (over)payment of the fees for the application, or request a full refund and pay the correct amount in the meantime? I saw on another thread that another person paid the correct amounts, but didn't select the Sponsorship Fee and it caused problems. Any advice for me? I feel so stupid for selecting the wrong category on the payment screen!Q. 6: What should I do if the amount of the receipt is too much?
A: You can send a request for refund for the full amount of the receipt with a copy of your receipt by fax to 613-952-6399 or by e-mail to HPM.PROD@cic.gc.ca with a scanned copy of your receipt, if possible, and purchase a new receipt for the correct amount. The second option is to submit the initial receipt with your application and the processing center will refund the overpayment. Your request for refund must include your name, current address, receipt number, date of transaction, amount and reason for the refund.
If you don’t have the receipt number, we will need the first two and the last four digits of the credit card and the expiration date.
Q. 7: What do I do if the amount on the receipt is correct but I have checked the wrong service?
The receipt is not linked to a specific service. If the receipt is for the correct amount, you can submit it with your application regardless of the service you checked when you made the purchase online.
