Income considerations with sponsorship

Hi folks,

Thanks for the wonderful forum and answering my previous questions.

Had another hiccup that came up as we're looking further into applying for my PR in Canada. I'm from the US and am applying for PR through my spouse, who is Canadian. The problem is that I am the sole provider, my wife has no intention of working, and so would not meet the income requirements for sponsoring me. When immigrating to the US, it is possible to add a family member as a joint sponsor, but it doesn't seem like this is possible when applying to Canada. What are our options when it comes to applying to Canada, if the intention is that I will be working there to provide for her, not the other way around? Is there a way for a family member of hers to become a joint sponsor? Or does she need to get a job, at least for the time being?

Thanks so much!

There are no specific income requirements for spousal sponsorship. You just need to show CIC that you will not go on social assistance after becoming a PR.

So you can include info like what job you are qualified to do in Canada and what it will pay, if any of your spouse's family members will support you financially they can write testimonial letters, and write an explanation of your general plan of how you intend to support yourselves.

Thanks for the info! What (part of the) application would I append this extra documentation to though?

I would guess you put it with the section that asks about Option C printout and proof of employment (sections 17 and 18 on checklist).
