It would be good for her to file her taxes up to date, and to pay any if she has arrears. It is not necessary before she can sponsor you, but it won't hurt to do so.

I was in the same boat. I live abroad for 5 years, and never filed taxes the entire time in Canada. I gave the Canada revenue agency a call (skype is your friend here), and they told me that everything is Ok, and no taxes are owed since I do not have an income from Canada.

With regards to your application, they revenue agency will also be unable to provide you an Option-C printout, since you never filed taxes, but that is Ok and was told to provide local income tax statements from my job instead. (along with a letter stating why the Option-C was not included).

All in all, your wife should not have any issues.

I've lived outside Canada for 2 years, and just to be safe, I filed "zero" returns with CRA.

Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen (naturalize) currently living abroad taking care of my aging parent (no plan yet when I can return back to Canada).
I would like to know if we have a deadline to filed my taxes (I left last year and have not done it yet) and do I need to file my tax every year?
Thank you all
