Implied status?

Hello!

I am going to apply for Permanent Residence in the Common-Law category within this month. I currently have a student permit, which expires on May 30th, my question is, can I stay in the country while my application is being processed? I read that once you apply you will have something called "Implied status", what is that exactly?

Thanks!

In order to have implied status, while awaiting your PR application to be processed, you MUST submit either an Open Work Permit (OWP), or an application to extend your current status (Student, Visitor, etc.).

Submitting an Inland Spousal Sponsorship alone, does NOT give you implied status.

So even if my student permit expires, as long as I have applied, let's say for an Open Work permit with my PR application, I can stay in the country?
Sorry if I ask too many questions, but I wanna make sure 'cause I don't wanna have to leave and the cic website is quite confusing.
The open work permit application is what grants me the implied status right? But I won't get the work permit UNTIL the first stage is approved, which I'm not sure how long it takes but that doesn't matter. And if it's not approved then I don't get the work permit and I have to leave right?

Yes, but you can only submit an OWP application with an INLAND Spousal Sponsorship application...OWP is not available with an Outland application.

The key is to apply for OWP (or a visitor visa), along with your Inland PR application BEFORE your current status expires.

The current processing time for stage 1 (of 2) approval, known as Approval In Principle (AIP) is ~ 9 months. Your OWP would not be processed prior to AIP.

Good luck!
