Something has me worried. Can I go from Canada to the US while waiting for my PR?

My wife of 25 years(in August), is Canadian and my approved sponsor (family, outbound). The CIC has all our info and we are waiting. In August 2013 we are moving up to BC (we have a residence waiting for us). I expect to receive my PR next March (given the 12 month date I hear touted). I hope, as others on this forum, that my PR actually arrives in September.

Anyways, my father is 92 and while he is in excellent shape (seriously, the man square dances, builds furniture and is an excellent driver). I am concerned that I might need to go back to the states if something were to happen.

Once I live in Canada, prior to getting my PR I am under implied status and cannot travel? Or am I just misunderstanding

You can't actually "live" in Canada before you get PR. All you can do is visit. I'm sure this is what you meant. However I would work on getting the word "live" out of your system so that you don't accidentally use it when speaking with Canadian immigration.

There is nothing stopping you from returning to the States. Since you filed an outland application, there is no requirement to remain in Canada - and leaving Canada won't jeopardize your application. However be aware that every entry back into Canada will be treated as a new entry (i.e. you will have to pass immigration inspection each time again). Having a PR application process does not guarantee re-entry into Canada.
