On August 21, 2011, I posted the following:

I'm in love with a wonderful woman from Kenya who I met while she was in Canada last winter. She went home in April but has now obtained another 6 month visitor's visa for her and her 5 year old child. They will be coming to Canada in 2 weeks. If things go well I hope to propose to and marry this woman but I have some questions that I'm hoping someone on here can answer. They are:

1- Would we be better off to go ahead and get married while she is in Canada on her visa?

2- If we do marry, how long should we expect it to take once she applies to come to Canada permanently?

3- I've heard that it's more complex because I live in Quebec....is it that much worse?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Well, to keep it short, I proposed, she accepted and we got married in the winter of 2012. The permanent residency applications for my wife and child were received in early June of 2012. Today, we went to the CIC interview in Montreal. We were very nervous but the lady was extremely nice and everything went perfectly. My wife and son are now permanent residents of Canada and I'm so happy.

But, now that I've been through this process, I thought I'd go back and answer my original 3 questions. The answers are as follows:

1- Would we be better off to go ahead and get married while she is in Canada on her visa?

It's hard to say which is better since my only experience is with the "Spouse in Canada" process. All I can say is that our whole process took 15 months from start to finish and that includes a 4 month delay because of a mistake on the original application.

2- If we do marry, how long should we expect it to take once she applies to come to Canada permanently?

Like I said in the 1st answer. It took us 15 months from start to finish.

3- I've heard that it's more complex because I live in Quebec....is it that much worse?

After almost a year of dealing with CIC Vegraville, dealing with Quebec was an absolute pleasure. They spoke perfect English and couldn't have been more nice. They said it would take 51 days and it took exactly that. Yes there are a couple of extra steps because you live in Quebec but it's nothing compared to the federal application.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, while I'm by no means an expert, I will keep checking this thread for a while to see if I can help anyone with some advice from someone who has been where you probably are if you're still reading this post.

Good luck and God bless.

We made it!!! :)
