Immigration to Canada from the US....where to start?

I'm trying to help a friend immigrate to Canada from the US. He wants to come here to live and marry his Canadian girlfriend. He is part owner of an fishing/hunting outfitting business...not sure if that helps.

Could someone please tell me where to start?

The easiest route would be for him to be sponsored by his girlfriend - however to qualify they would have to be either married or have lived together for at least a full year.

OR have documentation to somehow prove that they were living together for a year...
