Hi, looking to see if anyone has any information on how a mental health nurse would be able to immigrate to Canada? I’m graduating in the next few years and want to immigrate over to Canada. Are entry level jobs available? I know there is a high demand for nursing staff etc. would I be able to have a sponsorship from an employer? How feesable is it? I’ll be looking at British Columbia or Banff (I know the cost of living is extremely high)

You will need to get work experience before you will be able to apply to immigrate. Immigration directly after finishing school won't be possible. Research the Express Entry program and also the BC PNP program to get an understanding of how various programs work.

Would suggest you start researching having your nursing qualifications recognized in either BC or Alberta if that is where you are looking to move. Given your education location you should be able to get licensed as an RN in Canada much easier than nurses from other countries but that doesn’t mean colleges don’t have significant bureaucracy and move at a snail’s pace. It should at least be better than it used to be. Availability of housing and cost will be a big issue in both locations. If you want to move to these areas to access the outdoors you may want to consider looking slightly out of the hotspots. In terms of places like Banff I would always bring up potential housing programs for local workers. The NHS is a mess but Canada is not far behind in terms of healthcare issues. As already indicated you’ll need to research express entry programs. You could also consider coming to Canada on a WP having researched and planned a pathway to permanent residency. Finding an employer willing to sponsor your application is currently very helpful but may not be necessary in the future as Canadian immigration programs undergo reforms. You also have the options of trying to get a WP through IEC. Good news is that Canada needs your nursing skills and that is unlikely to change any time soon and so there should be a way to come to Canada. Also tough to find mental health nurses since it isn’t a preferred specialty for most. There is unlikely going to be the need for hospital based mental health nurse in smaller communities. There may be some public health jobs in smaller centres that often involve mental health programs so that may be an option as well. If you have a desire to live in a smaller community I would focus on more general nursing, ED, geriatric care, general medicine, etc. Canada is a much more vast country than the UK so we have many small hospitals while higher needs cases are transferred to larger hospitals in urban centres which can be many hours.
