I am just about to begin sponsoring my common law partner to come to Canada.

But at the same time- but dad (a US citizen) is trying to start the process to get me a green card. (I may be attending a US law school in the coming years- and having a green card would make things easier)

Is this doable? Will I be violating some kind of regulation- Canadian or American?
Any help and personal experience would be very very appreciated!

Thanks a bunch!

I don't think it violates any regulation. The sponsorship of your common-law will probably be done before you get your green card so it should all work out. However, to keep a US green card, you basically have to be living in the US and you would also have to look into what kind of visa your partner can get. If it was Canada, getting an open work permit for a spouse of a student is often easy while a PR would have to sponsor their spouse for PR. It may be the same in the US. I've heard that as a PR in the US, it's very hard and time consuming to sponsor a spouse. On the other hand, having a green card may make it easier for you to attend school and may cut down your tuition fees.
