You can also check if Portugal has a working holiday visa for Canada, see <<<(link removed because i can't post them)>>> Many countries do, for example Germany and France. If they do, you and your girlfriend can apply separately and each of you get a 1 year open work permit in Canada. This opportunity to help you open doors in order to get a job offer and immigrate permanently.
i WILL look into that, thank you! :)

If you want to take IELTS (English), you go here: http://ielts.org/test_takers_information.aspx and look for a test that is near you. If you want to take TEF (French), you can look for test locations in Portugal here: http://www.canadavisa.com/proving-french-language-ability-tef.html

Is she your common-law partner? Canada defines that as one full year of cohabitation.

(P.S. Practice using Canadian numbers! 10,000.00! You'll need it when you get here!) :D

noticed that when practising the IELTS ("over $16,000").

Well, I've lived with her for over a year, but our documents still use separate addresses (her mom's and mine), will that be a problem? as i mentioned, in last case we'll just get married and that's it, not that much of a problem (documents would run for about €400). In that case, would it have to be BEFORE applying for immigration?

She'll still be able to visit with you, but you'll need proof of common-law (or marriage) for the spousal open work permit - no matter which of you gets it.

There's a variety of documents you can use to prove common-law. Easiest way to search for common-law threads on the forum and see what people have used/suggest. I've seen suggestions of apartment lease, co-habitation agreements, shared bills such as utility, joint bank accounts, and there's also a declaration of common-law form which you will probably need to send in to Immigration Canada with any permits anyway. (I'm married, so I don't know as much about common-law sorry.)

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5409E.PDF

Getting married is easier in general, but a good common-law application of any kind works just as well.

so, simply adding her name to my bank account would suffice? I don't see how that proves that we co-habited, but hey, not complaining here :p

I think it's more like one piece of the puzzle. You can also get letters from family and community members attesting to your relationship. If you have any relatives or family friends that are prominent members of the community, they're great choices for this.

I did a google for Immigration Common-Law Proof and found several other suggestions: Christmas (or whatever other holidays you may celebrate) given to you as a couple or letters sent to your joint residence for both of you ( single or joint).

Work permit common law proof does not have to be as extensive as immigration common law proof.

Here is what it says in the instruction guide for a work permit at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5487ETOC.asp :

A common-law partner

Refers to a person who is living in a conjugal relationship with another person (opposite or same sex), and has done so continuously for a period of at least one year. A conjugal relationship exists when there is a significant degree of commitment between two people.
Common-law partners must attach any documents that show they are in a committed and genuine relationship, for example, evidence that they share the same home, that they support each other financially and emotionally, that they have had children together, or that they present themselves in public as a couple.

Common-law partners who are unable to live together or appear in public together because of legal restrictions in their home country may still qualify and should be included on the application.

Common-law partners who meet the conditions outlined above but who have been separated for reasons beyond their control (for example, civil war or armed conflict) may qualify and should be included on the application.

If you were able to get a work permit with a working holiday program, each of you would be on your own. If you find a job and get a work permit that way, if the job is skilled, the other person can apply for an open work permit based on the partners work permit.

Leon is right there - I forgot to mention your work permit must meet "skilled"standards in order for your spouse to get a spouse work permit. If you obtain a job based on your university degree, it *should* be skilled.

I feel like a halftard giving you info sometimes lol.
