It is very important for potential asylum seekers from Russia to specify if they have received mobilization letter, if they are a vocal opposition member, whether they have been jailed for protesting, etc. That has a big impact on potential approval. For example a young man was granted asylum approval because he received a mobilization letter while visiting his family in Canada. If you are a woman and not a vocal opposition member it will be much more difficult to gain asylum. Being Russian is not enough to gain asylum. If not part of the specified groups people should be looking at economic immigration to come to Canada.
So honestly speaking, there isn't going to be a clear answer to this question and you'll have to be prepared to roll the dice.
Some are able to obtain their work permits quickly and some end up waiting a very long time (1+ year). There's no way to guarantee which way it will go for you. Be prepared for the overall timelines for your refugee claim to take up to 2 years (shorter is of course possible). This is to be recognized as a protected person, There is then additional waiting time to apply for PR.
Just to add, can you give more information about how / where you plan to claim asylum? Are you doing this at a port of entry? Are you coming from a safe country covered by the safe third country agreement or elsewhere?
I am coming not from the usa. Actually from Kazakhstan. And I'm claiming my asylum at a poe.
If you are claiming asylum at a port of entry and don't fall under the third safe country agreement, then I believe eligibility will be completed on the spot. But wait for others to confirm.
I'm not sure about the work permit. We've seen a number of people here wait a very long time for their work permits.
As others said due to large volume of asylum seekers who have entered Canada in the past year but especially in the past months wait times for processing anything have become much longer and there is also some luck involved. Some are lucky and get a WP within months while some are waiting closer to a year. Canada is getting to a point where they don’t know where to put asylum claimants anymore if they don’t arrive with friends/ family in Canada and have no funds of their own. There is a huge shortage of affordable housing. If you have family or friends in Canada I would see if it may be possible to stay with them for a period of time.
